Limit distributions for multitype branching processes of m-ary search trees

چکیده
Let m ≥ 3 be an integer. The so-called m-ary search tree is a discrete time Markov chain which is very popular in theoretical computer science, modelling famous algorithms used in searching and sorting. This random process satisfies a well-known phase transition: when m ≤ 26, the asymptotic behavior of the process is Gaussian, but for m ≥ 27 it is no longer Gaussian and a limit W of a complex-valued martingale arises. In this paper, we consider the multitype branching process which is the continuous time version of the m-ary search tree. This process satisfies a phase transition of the same kind. In particular, when m ≥ 27, a limit W of a complex-valued martingale intervenes in its asymptotics. Thanks to the branching property, the law of W satisfies a smoothing equation of the type Z L = e−λT (Z + · · ·+Z), where λ is a particular complex number, Z are complex-valued random variables having the same law as Z, T is a R+-valued random variable independent of the Z, and L = denotes equality in law. This distributional equation is extensively studied by various approaches. The existence and uniqueness of solution of the equation are proved by contraction methods. The fact that the distribution of W is absolutely continuous and that its support is the whole complex plane is 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary: 60C05. Secondary: 60J80, 05D40.

Central Limit Theorem in Multitype Branching Random Walk
A discrete time multitype (p-type) branching random walk on the real line R is considered. The positions of the j-type individuals in the n-th generation form a point process. The asymptotic behavior of these point processes, when the generation size tends to infinity, is studied. The central limit theorem is proved.

متن کاملFringe trees, Crump–Mode–Jagers branching processes and m-ary search trees
This survey studies asymptotics of random fringe trees and extended fringe trees in random trees that can be constructed as family trees of a Crump–Mode–Jagers branching process, stopped at a suitable time. This includes random recursive trees, preferential attachment trees, fragmentation trees, binary search trees and (more generally) m-ary search trees, as well as some other classes of random...
متن کاملFunctional Limit Theorems for Multitype Branching Processes and Generalized Pólya Urns
A functional limit theorem is proved for multitype continuous time Markov branching processes. As consequences, we obtain limit theorems for the branching process stopped by some stopping rule, for example when the total number of particles reaches a given level. Using the Athreya–Karlin embedding, these results yield asymptotic results for generalized Pólya urns. We investigate such results in...

A random m-ary leach tree is constructed from a random permutation of 1, . . . , n. A la of large numbers is obtained for the height Hn of these trees by applying the theory of branching random alks . In particular, it is sho n that Ha/log n y in probability as n ---~ oo, here y = y(m) is a constant depending upon m only. Interestingly, as m ---~ 00 , y(m) is asymptotic to 1/log m, the coeffici...
